The Gene: An Intimate History. The Gene is a collaboration of all-stars, including executive producer Ken Burns, award-winning senior producer and co-writer Barak Goodman (Cancer: The Emperor of All Maladies), and Dr. Siddhartha Mukherjee, an executive producer and the Pulitzer Prize-winning author of the book on which the documentary is based.
In roughly four hours, it covers the history of genetics, moving from the earliest theories of Aristotle and Gregor Mendel’s pea plant experiments to the discovery of the double helix in 1953 and the modern era of CRISPR and gene editing.
The doc features on-screen interviews with the titans of the field, including James Watson (co-discoverer of DNA’s structure), Francis Collins (former director of the National Human Genome Research Institute), Jennifer Doudna (Nobel Laureate and CRISPR pioneer), and Nancy Wexler (co-discoverer of the Huntington’s disease gene), among many others.
