This course explores three of the main science disciplines (Chemistry, Physics, and Biology) through an integrated hands-on-approach. Our course seeks to fulfill both the IB’s Middle Years Program requirements, and the NYS standards as stated in the Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS). Students are encouraged to make connections between scientific concepts and their applications in everyday life.
Unit 1: Cells and Bodies
This unit covers the structure and function of several major human body systems, and explores how we have come to understand the function of specialized cells.
HeLa Cells Presentation
The 7th grade class were tasked with creating presentations on the history and uses of HeLa cells. Often called "immortal cells", these cells were taken from Henrietta Lacks in 1951 and have since revolutionized the world of medicine. The students questioned whether this decision was ethical, as although the discovery of these cells was crucial in developing the cures for many diseases, they were collected without her consent.
Lung Capacity Experiments
For their first lab experiment, the class were asked to design their own experiments to determine how a person's lung capacity can change in different environments and conditions. These experiments used many different independent variables, such as physical activity or using musical instruments.
